This past weekend Sean and I loaded up the car and braved taking our two under two on a six hour road trip. The occasion - Nicholls family reunion.
I spent Thursday night running around the house trying to make sure we had absolutely everything we could need. Keep in mind we stayed with relatives so the list at the end of this blog will not be inclusive of EVERYTHING we had.
We decided that it would be best to hit the road pretty soon after Bailey’s morning feed so as we could get both of them in the car whilst they are calm and still in sleep mode. This was a great idea for Bailey.. she basically slept the whole drive *WINNING*. Xavier however was wired from his change of scenery and BARELY slept.. win some and lose some I guess 🤷🏼♀️
The thing that works best for us is to have a “emergency box”... inside this box you can find:
- nappies
- wipes
- panadol
- bonjella / teething gel
- toys to bribe Xavier sith
- spare dummies
- SNACKS.. lots and lots of snacks
This became super handy on the way down the coast when Xavier decided it was time after 18 lucky months to treat us to a poonami.. cue us standing in a car park in Holbrook using nearly a whole container of baby wipes with our child standing pantless next to the car 😂
Our friendly little guy was so proud of himself that he was giggling as his dad wiped him down and even waved at an elderly couple who just smiled and waved in return.. cue Sean and I absolutely mortified by our poo boy.
Finally we arrived and our goal first thing when we arrive anywhere is to set up Xavier’s porta cot and Bailey’s bassinet. This means we are ready to go for as close to normal routine as we can get. This was the first time Xavier would sleep in the same room as Bailey so we knew it would take some work to have the system organised.
Over the next few days we spent plenty of time with our extended family. Plenty of laughs, crying, stories and love were shared.
Saturday we went on an adventure to the ‘Browns Brothers Winery’.. something that was on my bucket list for years! It was our first time in the area I was a) over 18.. and b) NOT PREGNANT! We also made our way to Milawa to the bakery and then out to Eldorado to check out where the gold mining was. We ended our day at Corowa Whisky and Chocolate with a personal tour and tasting by my Uncle.
Sunday we had a quiet day around the house and then ended up back at our favourite place Corowa Whisky and Chocolate! There Xavier made his own chocolate freckle and we enjoyed some coffee whilst we waited for it to set.
My biggest win whilst they are this age is take a small umbrella stroller for Xavier and wear Bailey! It saved so much space compared to the pram I use at home as we barely needed the pram anyway!
Then finally Monday it was time to pack the kids into the car and come home. I have to say traveling with 2 under 2 is not that hard.. all you need is to be organised, prepared for anything they throw at you.. and the wiggles soundtrack on Spotify! I take no responsibility if you go mad listening to the wiggles though!
Our plan is once Bailey is a bit older, to get the kids car DVD players!
Our must have items -
- music
- all medications
- lots of dummies
- snacks and more snacks
- milk (we forgot this 😂)
- phone chargers
- car toys
- easily accessible clothing
- nappies/ wipes and poo bags
- a stroller/ umbrella stroller
- wrap carrier
- wash bags (organise baggage)
- socks for the kids in the car
- water (handy for side of the road handwashing)
There are so many nore hints and tips I can write but I will save them for a rainy day.
Until next time,
